spent today with my family at the Academy of Sciences in San Francisco

after our rounds we ate at the moss room, same owners as The Slanted Door in downtown SF. My dads and his mountainous salad.
It was a good day. My pops, being the science nerd he is, was handy whenever I had a question. He has a membership because he works for the state. I can get a guest in for free. Wouldn’t mind going again.
Oh, and I totally want a pet Lemur!
Here’s to 2010, and the promise of the year to come: filled with love, joy, and accomplishments.
Happy New Years!

The following is a re-post/re-tweet/re-”internet lingo for putting it out there” for all from the DJ himself.

to all you MJ fans, check out this Mixtape put together by DJ Jazzy Jeff featured on UNDRCRWN’s website. Great selection of MJ’s work. Good craft on Jazzy Jeff’s part. Highly bumpable. Enjoy.
My close friends know that with every major change of season I make a mix CD, mostly of feel-good radio joints, some not played on the radio stuff to take me from one spot to the next and can work as both a chillin’ at home thing or a cruisin’ in the coche thing. I try to frame it with what the weather is making me feel, but this time around isn’t foolproof because Mother Nature’s been mix bagging us with what we get…
For what it’s worth: The latest playlist. If you’re looking for one during this season, give it a spin. I can make you one too, if you like.
Doesn’t Mean Anything – Alicia Keys

Has it really been a month and a half since my last post? Ideas, words, thoughts, any type of inspiration at all I love so you can bet I’ve been wanting to drop knowledge on diff topics that I’ve come across since my last post. When I don’t write anything of significance (even if it’s just a 3 sentence blurb) I miss it. So here goes.
This summer has been mighty busy. Vacations, staycations, Vegas, visitors, weddings, you name it. Topping the list of summer must-dos are our festivals. I mean, learning about local artists, businesses and bay arean culture for no entrance fee? Enjoying a summer weekend getting fresh air and during the day with friends? People watching while walking amongst people, groups, families and those of all ages? Definitely a highlight.
A couple of weeks ago I went to the Art and Soul festival in Oakland. While walking around I passed a t-shirt stand with eye-catching designs. Not your average graphic tees, the reason why I continued to look back at the stand even as I walked away because I noticed each shirt had some sort of social/idealistically aware message. Luckily we once again passed the stand on the way out. Turns out their prices dropped to half off as the festival was shutting down, probably because it was the last day. I copped my shirt for $10. Wanna see?

Dope huh? 10 dollars and unique? It doesn’t stop there. Anyone who can create a tee design can submit them to the company. If their design is chosen, then they receive a $1 lifetime royalty for each shirt sold. In addition another dollar of the shirt’s profits is also donated to Non-Profit organizations chosen by users on their website, goodjoe.com. I checked out the other designs on the website. Sure enough, good stuff. To show a few:

The two guys (also the owners) that I met at Art and Soul care a lot about their following. If you sign up for their mailing list and become a member of their website, you receive a weekly email with updates. And as a fan of anyone or anything with soul, I’m diggin the e-mail messages I’ve received. You also have the opportunity to peep the t-shirt of the week AND receive it for half the price during its premiere.
Cool no?
(taken from the flyer I received from them at the festival)
About Goodjoe: We are a genuine, community-based, and affordable T-shirts and apparel brand that breathes the belief of “not only living a good life, but also living an unselfish life.”
(the flyer was printed on 100% post consumer waste paper bought from Staples)
Methinks there needs to be more entrepenuers out there supporting good art with good hearts. In the meantime, thanks to goodjoe for making my world that much happier.

[23rd Annual San Francisco Aids Walk 7.19.2009]
3.8 million dollars raised as of yesterday 7.20.2009
This past Sunday I participated in San Francisco’s AIDS walk. It’s been around as long as I can remember- when I was a little girl, one of my older cousins was visiting from Los Angeles during the summer and told me that a stranger invited her to the AIDS walk as a first date. Looking into his backseat after he picked me up, I spied a stack of fliers in an ex-summer love’s car a couple of julys past. Fellow dancers in a workshop last year asking me if I walked. Several of my own personal memories that are telling of how embedded the event is in San Franciscan culture.
On Market Street, the Civic center or even a couple months back in November at Dolores park, protests aren’t an unexpected thing in our city. Our mayor outlawed plastic bags from being given out at grocery stores. Since I’ve gotten involved in the scene, I’ve noticed a non-profit on just about every other block in the extremely urban parts of our city. I can say this and it’s not unfounded: San Franciscans care about causes that affect the larger world in which we live in.
The aids walk is a testament to this. Tons of young, older, and senior volunteers handing out food, registering walkers, cheering folks on along the way and doing just about everything they can to offer support. Activists beginning the morning praising the reasons that put everyone who was there in attendance. Musicians and artists providing music to continue the spark in our step. Sponsors offering free food, snacks and juice to walkers along the way. Mothers, Fathers, lovers, children and animals spread about in clusters throughout the 6 mile loop in Golden Gate Park.

Cat!

they had walkers voluntarily sign huge walls. can you find mine?

give up?

It was a memorable time. As someone who jogs pretty regularly, I totally underestimated how exhausting walking 6 miles would be. Oh, and wearing jeans was a semi-fail. As I started to get weary/whiney I checked myself by thinking about the reason why everyone was there.
I will do it again. Join me?
Brazil 101. Five basic culture tidbits brought to you by GiGi’s eye.
environmental culture.
In comparison to America, Brazil is pretty damn green. The country uses ethanol fuel, an eco-friendly alternative to fossil fuel. It’s a lot cheaper too.
I took this picture of gas prices in Iguazu Brazil. The price on the right hand side is how much one would pay per gallon to fill up their tanks. 1 american dollar is equivalent to 1.97 brazilian reales. After being back in SF for a week, I was tripped out to find that gas prices had risen about 50 cents since I left! Do the math. Cheap fuel that’s good for the environment.
It’s looking like Brazilian motorists have a better deal all around. Yes, ethanol is probably more suitable to Brazil’s climate than America’s, but if this country can survive off of fuel options other than diesel, Why is the US afraid to look into alternatives?

77% of all electricity produced in Brazil is Hydro-Electric. People who care enough to use renewable energy are good people. A prime example of this is the sharing and caring that goes down between countries. Iguazu falls sits on the borders of both Argentina and Brazil. In addition to demonstrating how nature does beautiful, Iguazu falls also generates electricity. How is the energy distributed? Neighboring Paraguay pays for their share, but Brazil exports free electricity to Argentina during the winter. In exchange, Argentina exports free electricity to Brazil during the summer. Take a look at the view I got of the falls from my very first helicopter ride. Cool, no?
sub-culture
Rio de Janeiro, one of Brazil’s infamous cities knows how to get down with the get down. Also known as Cariocas, folks who live in the city are fun-loving, good-spirited and can have a good time. On my first night there, I was out on the beach with my group past 10, enjoying some drinks. Looking around, I saw entire families also out on the beach enjoying dinner at with us.

When they fiesta, certain blocks in the city are shut down and comissioned for nothing other than the partay. On slot machines, t-shirts and this graph art piece, I saw plenty-a Halloween references in rio. When I asked my tour guide why this mural was put up in Copacabana, the beach neighborhood where I stayed, he gave a pretty cool explanation. Halloween is a really big deal in terms of celebrations in Rio. Not just for Halloween, each time any big celebration is thrown, the city creates street art to honor its significance. This piece above was created at the end of a Halloween block party thrown years ago.
I found a spirit of enjoyment not only in the city of Rio but all around Brazil. On our second night we were in Paraty, a small colonial Beach town. That night, similar to towns and cities all across Brazil, they celebrated the feast of the divine spirit. We saw a “Mr. and Miss Paraty pageant celebration” and walked to the city’s center where handfuls of booths were set up to hand out food and alcohol. Once again, I saw families and people of all ages out celebrating on a Sunday night. I think we could learn something from them.
cultura liquor

Cachaça, a rum-like liquor made in only Brazil is the main ingredient in the Caipirinha, Brazil’s national cocktail. Yes. They have a national cocktail. Although Caipirinhas are served in your average-sized bar glass, don’t be fooled about its potency. It’s not your average rum based drink- they pack quite a punch.

A picture of my very first Caipirinha. I should have stuck with a basic, but got tempted by the different variations on our menu so ended up ordering one of the passionfruit kind. It was loaded with seeds- I liked chewing on them after I finished the drink.
Everyone who I was with agreed that they probably contain at least 90% alchohol. How Caipirinhas taste so sweet (really, not figuratively- if I could draw a paralell I would liken it to a fruity mojito) yet are deathly strong is unbelievable. It’s too bad I got sick mid-trip. Afterwards I stayed away from them for fear my stomach would never forgive me!
Pop-Culture
Okay, so I wasn’t there long enough to learn about Brazil’s pop culture. Celebrity gossip is for the bored and I didn’t have enough time to get bored to the point where I learned theirs. I did brush up on ours however. I guess our gossip is also theirs. My tourguide loves his divas, Brittany included. On one of our flights he had me watch this video with him on his itouch. Everyone around us on the plane wondered what we were being so loud about. “I feel like I’m missing out… On life. and things. and things!” The video was taken by her ex-husband, who sold it to the tabloids for millions. Poor girl, but it’s freaking hillarious, so I couldn’t help laughing at it.
cultura comida

I couldn’t end a blog about Brazil with Brittany so I’m bringing things to a richer note by talking about their food. Meat, meat, meat! On our first night we ate at a chuscarria, which was probably when I had the best piece of picanha steak. Medium, and juicy. Everywhere else I had it (we ate a lot of steak) it was overcooked.
In Paraty Brazil, we ate at a place called casa do fogo, a restaurant specializing in flambé. It was here where I ate a mean fish, flambé style. It was cooked so tender that it literally melted in my mouth.

The flames also did a good job at locking in a distinct flavors: a mixture light vinegar, olive oil and pepper. The only thing missing was brown rice. I also ordered this cool Star fruit dessert. They weren’t lying about it’s description.

Too bad I was already full by the time it arrived. I could only squeeze in a couple of bites.
I was only in Brazil for 5 days and I have so much to say about what I saw and experienced. Hope you enjoyed reading about all of it as much as I loved taking it in while I was there. The country has a unique energy, the people are extremely friendly and there’s so much to discover. Given the fact that I jam packed three Brazilian cities during a small frame of time, five days was too short. Now that three weeks have passed by it almost seems as if my description of what I experienced is just a bunch of words taken from a dream. So much for my teaser. I can only imagine how much I’ll have to say the next time I go because I will go back one day. I’ll be back to hear the sounds of the beautiful Portuguese language being spoken, listen to bossa novan melodies and feel the warmth of tropic breezes. That and more.
Pop quiztime. The following is a picture, taken in vegas. What is it for?

You’ve probably seen it yourselves. I’d seen this in a bunch of folks’ vegas pics but I guess it’s one of those things that which you don’t truly know its importance unless you’re there and you experience it yourself. The mirage is not only home to tryst (a cool night spot to hit up for vegas funsies) it also totes cirque du soleil show Love, featuring none other than songs by the legendary Beatles.
My misconceptions had me thinking that most Cirque du soleil shows were dark and sexual. Uh, no thanks! Sounds just a little too creepy for me. But after hearing about the show and asking lots of questions about its content, I confirmed it was sans folks wearing skincolored body suits wielding chains and whips. I resolved to check it out during the next family trip because we go often.

Our generation and our social circle loves vegas. So during the next trip or when you happen to want to see a show, please please please please see this. Because I want you all to see it so much, I’m not gonna say too much to spoil what goes down during the show itself. But to sum it up, the show was, and made me feel beautiful.

Imagine what it would be like to have a visual of a Beatles song for you to view through colors, special effects, lights, dancing, action, the list goes on and on. This is what the show is. I saw the show with my mom. She sung along with the tunes, it was a little corny because she didn’t know all the words, but all the less endearing. She smiled at me, at one point saying: “This music was during my time! My college years!” Cute moms.
Cute.
